Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Data Analysis Intern

Medical Care Development International is the International Division of Medical Care Development, a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Maine in the 1960s. Since 1977, MCDI has provided technical assistance to over 40 countries and institutions in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East. MCDI implements a variety of health programs in areas that include malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, maternal and child health (MCH), water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and performance-based financing (PBF) in Africa with funding from USAID, the World Bank, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM), the Global Sanitation Fund, UNICEF, non-USG public donors and commercial sector donors.

Overview of the Position:

The GIS and Data Analysis Intern will assist in the performance of data cleaning, analysis, and mapping functions in support of the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of MCDI’s international portfolio of donor-funded health projects.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) duties

GIS mapping is an integral part of project monitoring and evaluation at MCDI, with many datasets being georeferenced for actionable analysis results.
The Intern will support building an open-sourced database and country profiles for locations of MCDI’s country office and other work overseas:

a. Research creditable open sourced sites such as OpenStreetMap, ArcGIS Online, USAID GeoCenter, Ministry of Health websites, Government websites, DHS, etc.
b. Clean and join data layers pertaining to health areas, health facilities, entomological monitoring data, water and sanitation, and administrative units and upload data to a shared server
c. Create a series of maps and country profiles using the open-sourced data
d. Create other maps and/or graphics as needed for project implementation or proposal development

Under the supervision of the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, the Intern will also liaise with and provide support to those individuals at MCDI’s country offices who are directly responsible for GIS data collection. Analysis of geo-referenced data using ArcGIS Online may be carried out with coaching from the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer.

Data Analysis Duties
The Intern, working under the direction and supervision of the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, will support the proper configuration of historical data for dashboard analysis:
a. Clean and join data layers pertaining to health areas, health information systems, entomology, household surveys, indoor residual spraying of insecticides, and census data
b. Use data management tools to create fields and manipulate data
c. Create data visualization dashboards as needed (e.g. using Tableau)

Qualifications:
•Interest in a career in public health, international development, data science, geography, or a related field

Application Requirements:
•Ability to dedicate 40 hours a week to an internship
•Have taken a minimum of one university-level GIS course
•Proficiency in the use of Excel, Word, and other standard office software (basic knowledge of SQL a plus)
•Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate challenges as well as to ask for clarification
•Ability to communicate in Spanish, in addition to English, a plus

Projected start date: April 1, 2019

Term: Approximately 12 weeks

Conditions: This internship is paid and provides practical experience using public health data, data management software, and improving skills in MS Excel.
